We’re thrilled to share the news that HKUST's Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (AI) program has been ranked No. 1 in Hong Kong and 10th globally in the latest QS World University Rankings by Subject 2024. This is a testament to our unwavering commitment to advancing education and nurturing the next generation of leaders who will make a difference in the world.
At HKUST, we’ve always been at the forefront of education. As the first university in Hong Kong that embraces ChatGPT, we were being both bold and cautious when incorporating open AI into our teaching. We set up guidelines, formed a taskforce to review its proper use, and founded a HK$10 million fund to encourage the adoption of novel ideas for using AI tools in class. That was only one of the latest developments against our solid history of innovative initiatives in teaching and learning – such as launching the city’s first tech-based data science program in 2018 and being one of the first in Asia to introduce Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) in 2012.
On research front, our teams persistently pioneer AI applications for global challenges, particularly in aging population and disease treatment. We’ve developed cutting-edge AI applications in various fields, including early risk forecasting of Alzheimer's Disease, medical imaging for cancer surgery, glioma prognosis, and more. We’ve recently launched the International Hub of AI for Medicine to continue spearheading world-leading research in the field of life medicine, and supporting Hong Kong in becoming a hub of health and medical innovation. This initiative includes the development and screening of new drugs and vaccines, as well as more precise and faster biological imaging analysis.
As a leading institution in AI education and research, HKUST seeks to become a hub of thought leadership to foster knowledge exchange between the East and West. We hosted two impactful AI forums last year that brought together some of the world’s brightest minds, including two Turing Prize winners dubbed Godfathers of AI, President and other senior leaders from Microsoft, LinkedIn, Meta, as well as top AI scholars from Tsinghua University, to address AI’s potentials and challenges. We also lead cross-disciplinary and cross-institution collaborations to facilitate application of AI technology. One example is the recent establishment of the Hong Kong Generative AI Research and Development Center (HKGAI), which is committed to enhancing Hong Kong’s global influence in AI research and applications. Recently, HKGAI showcased ten generative AI services and applications for the first time at the InnoEx 2024, including an Expert Consultation Service Chatbot, 3D Image Content Generation, Future Writing-Copilot and more.
HKUST continuously leads the pack in global rankings, including ranking No. 1 in China under the patent influence metric of the Nature Index (2022), and No. 1 in HK under the overall number of patents granted based on University Grants Committee’s definition under the Common Data Collection Format (CDCF) in 2022/23. 我們很高興與大家分享，在最新的2024年《QS世界大學分科排名》中，香港科技大學（科大）的數據科學及人工智能課程在香港排名第一，全球排名第十。此佳績引證我們致力推進教育，以培養能夠改變世界的下一代領袖。
科大一直走在教育的最前線。作為香港第一所支持使用 ChatGPT 的大學，我們將開放式人工智能融入教學時果敢且謹慎，包括制定指引、成立工作小組以檢測人工智能的正確使用，並設立了一個 1,000 萬港元的基金，鼓勵教職員在課堂上透過人工智能工具實踐創意教學。多年來，我們在教與學方面實踐創新的舉措多不勝數——例如在 2018 年，科大已推出全港第一個以技術為本的大數據課程，而於2012年亦是首批於亞洲提供「大規模開放在線課程」（MOOCs）的大學。
在研究方面，我們的團隊不斷開拓人工智能應用方案以應對全球挑戰，尤其在人口老化及疾病治療方面建樹良多。我們已於多個領域開發了前沿的人工智能應用，包括阿爾茲海默症的早期風險預測、癌症手術醫學影像、神經膠質瘤預後等。最近，我們更開展了國際AI醫藥樞紐（International Hub of AI for Medicine）計劃，繼續引領全球生命醫學領域的研究，並支持香港發展成為醫療創新樞紐。此計劃將包括新型藥物與疫苗的開發和篩選，以及更精準和快速的生物成像分析。
作為在人工智能教育及研究方面的領先院校，科大致力促進國際知識交流。我們於2023年舉辦了兩場具影響力的人工智能論壇，匯集了世界知名人才就人工智能的潛力和挑戰進行交流，當中包括兩位被譽為「AI教父」的圖靈獎得主、來自微軟、LinkedIn、Meta的主席及其他高層，以及清華大學的頂尖人工智能學者等。科大亦引領跨學科、跨機構的合作，促進人工智能技術的應用。近月成立的「香港生成式人工智能研發中心」（HKGAI）便是一例。HKGAI旨在推動生成式人工智能技術在香港的研究和應用，最近更在「香港國際創科展2024」上首度展示了十項生成式人工智能服務和應用，包括「專家諮詢服務機器人」、「三維圖像內容生成」、「未來寫作助手」等。
